Imposter Syndrome in Women: Why Success Doesn’t Silence Self-Doubt.

Womeniverse™ community member Kate Goodman shares a guest blog on imposter syndrome in women, self-doubt after success, chronic illness, and why honest support from other women matters more than perfection

I've Built a Business, Written a Book, and I Still Have Imposter Syndrome. You?
I’m Kate, founder of The Good Comms Company and a communications consultant with over twenty years of experience helping organisations find the right words for the right moment. Thirteen years ago, I became a mum and then very swiftly became self-employed, after my employer didn’t give me my job back after maternity leave. Not the plan. But, as it turns out, one of the best things that ever happened to me.
Why I Joined Womeniverse™
I’ve been part of the Women of Our Time world for some time now. I co-authored the book Woman of Our Time with founder Karen Powell and her late sister Lesley, and that experience of women sharing their stories honestly, without dressing them up, stayed with me. So when the Womeniverse™ came along, joining wasn’t really a question. It felt like a natural next step.
Why Women Supporting Women Still Matters
I believe in the power of the collective. I believe in women’s voices. And I believe that unfortunately we still have a long way to go in dismantling the often deeply ingrained, often unchallenged behaviours that push women to the edges or set us against each other.
I’m raising a teenage boy, which makes me think about all of this even more.
What Kind of World Do I Want for the Next Generation?
One where women support each other, and where nobody has to shrink themselves to fit. That’s where I want to put my energy.
Imposter Syndrome in Women, Even After Success
I run a successful business, I’ve co-authored a book, I’ve built something I’m genuinely proud of, but honestly, I still have days where the imposter syndrome is deafening. Days where I think I’m too fat, too boring, not quite enough of the right things.
I also live with Lupus SLE, an incurable autoimmune condition, which means some days are harder than others, and on those days, the self-doubt gets louder too.
Living With Chronic Illness and Self-Doubt
My motto is ‘keep on trucking’, but I’ve learned to be kind to myself when the truck needs a pit stop. On the better days, you’ll find me on a walk with my cockapoo Daisy, weather permitting, I’m not that dedicated, resetting my very-many-open-tabs brain with yoga, or reading with my cat firmly installed on my lap, making slow but determined progress on my children’s novel.
Why More Women Need to Talk About Self-Doubt
I don’t think I’m unusual in any of this. I think this is what it’s actually like to be a woman, at almost any stage, at almost any level of success. We just don’t say it out loud very often. And I think we should.
Because when we do, when we’re honest with each other about the wobbles and the hard days and the voice in our heads that says, ‘who the devil do you think you are?’ something shifts. It gets a little quieter. And we remember we’re not alone in it.
What Womeniverse™ Can Be for Women Like Us
That’s what I believe the Womeniverse™ can be. Not a place where everyone’s thriving and polished and on brand. But a place where we’re honest and where we support each other through the confidence gaps as much as the career ones.
Thinking About Joining Womeniverse™?
If you’re thinking about joining, you don’t have to be at a particular stage, or have a particular story, or show up in a particular way. You just have to be a woman who’s ready to stop pretending she’s got it all figured out, and ready to find a space full of other women who feel exactly the same.
